Ironwood Forest—A National Treasure in Our Back Yard
Sunday, March 7th
12:00 pm - 2:00 pm

Ironwood Forest—A National Treasure in Our Back Yard

On Sunday March 7, 2910, at noon, Lahsha Brown, Executive Director of Friends of Ironwood Forest, will speak at Mountain Vista UU—the Unitarian Universalist Congregation of Northwest Tucson. She will describe the Ironwood Forest National Forest as well as the ironwood tree, one of the most ecologically important plant species in our region. Ironwood Forest National Monument possesses one of the richest stands of ironwood trees in the Sonoran Desert and contains a significant system of cultural and historical sites covering a 5,000 year period. Learn more about the area's fascinating history and future.

We have had this national treasure in our back yard since President Clinton established the Ironwood Forest as a National Monument 10 years ago. = He entrusted the Bureau of Land Management to look after the Monument. Soon after that, a group of volunteers called Friends of Ironwood Forest formed to protect the fragile resources of the Monument, as well as provide public education and service projects in partnership with the BLM. This 30-minute presentation will be followed by time for questions and discussion. This event is free and open to the public. For more information, contact contact Hobie Denny at hobied@gmail.com or 253-857-5171

St. Michael's Guatemala Project
CALL FOR SUMMER 2010 TEAMS

PRELIMINARY MEETING SUNDAY MARCH 7, 3 - 4:45 P.M.

Ward VI Council Office, East Meeting Room

3202 E. First Street (enter through rear door)

Volunteers interested in joining small teams to visit the rural Maya of the CPR-Sierra for 2 to 9 weeks, from mid-June through early August, are invited to bring their questions March 7 for a preliminary discussion with former participants.  Spanish speakers and health professionals, including dentists, are particularly encouraged to participate in this informal collaboration with local Mayan health promoters.

Anyone interested in the project is welcome to attend the meeting, which will focus on team experience and expectations, and will include slides of the communities and the work.

Team paritcipants help courier supplies from the U.S. After in-country orientation, they accompany Mayan health workers and the Coordinator on 2 to 4 week "giras" (circuits) to small rural communities, pariticpate in daily life, and work alongside local health promotors.  Flexibility, respect for indigenous cultures, and good physical and emotional health are essential.  Two of the giras involve extensive mountain walking on irregular, muddy, steep footpaths.

All participants pay their own expenses.

For more complete team information, contact Coordinator Ila Abernathy, (520) 623-3063, ilaa@mindspring.com, or R.N. Sarah Roberts, (520) 577-1806.

St. Michael's Guatemala Project is an ongoing, nonprofit, non-sectarian informal partnership with the Maya of the CPR-Sierra [Communities of Population in Resistance of the Sierra] that continues a relationship begun in 1993. Focus areas include community health and health education, advocacy, arts and culture, mutual learning, and commitment to indigenous self-determination. Presently the Project provides economic aid to 25 to 30 rural Mayan health workers and helps with other health needs.
