Democracy & Dissent Book Group
Sunday, January 4th
2:00 pm - 4:00 pm
Group will discuss A Long Way Gone: Memoirs of a Boy Soldier, Ishmael Beah, Sarah Crichton ($12).  Children have become soldiers of choice. In the more than fifty conflicts going on worldwide, it is estimated that there are some 300,000 child soldiers. Ishmael Beah used to be one of them. What is war like through the eyes of a child soldier? How does one become a killer? How does one stop? Until now, there has not been a first-person account from someone who came through this hell and survived. In "A Long Way Gone," Beah, now twenty-five years old, tells a riveting story: how at the age of twelve, he fled attacking rebels and wandered a land rendered unrecognizable by violence. By thirteen, he'd been picked up by the government army, and Beah, at heart a gentle boy, found that he was capable of truly terrible acts. This is a rare and mesmerizing account, told with real literary force and heartbreaking honesty.

National Women and Girls HIV/AIDS Awareness Day event planning
Wednesday, January 7th
2:00 pm - 3:30 pm
In 2005, women represented 26% of new AIDS diagnoses (up from 11% in 1990) with women of color being disproportionately affected by HIV/AIDS. Most of these infections are contracted through heterosexual contact and intravenous drug use. We invite our mothers, daughters, sisters, and friends to plan events for NWGHAAD (in March) that will help us reach out into the community to educate ourselves and keep us all healthy. Last year's events were great, this year we aim to double our effort. Join us and bring your friends! See http://www.hhs.gov/aidsawarenessdays/days/woman/index.html for more information.  We will meet every Wednesday from 17-DEC-2008 until 18-MAR-2009, with the time to be determined when we know what works best for all (or most) participants; until then, we will meet at 2:00PM on 12/17, not on 12/24 or 12/31, at 6:00PM on 1/7, at 2:00PM on 1/14, and 6:00PM on 1/21.

Tucson Peace Calendar
Border Summer - Active resistance against a deadly border policy

When the US Government implemented a new border policy in 1994 based on walls and deterrence, the deaths began. In the summer of 2000, Humane Borders formed and began putting water tanks in the desert for migrants to drink from. Two years went by and the number of lives lost due to dehydration and exposure rose. Then a second group, the Samaritans, came together and began driving the highways and back roads, offering help to anyone in need. And yet the deaths continued to rise. In 2004, No More Deaths came into being as a coalition, setting up desert aid camps and in 2006, migrant aid stations in Nogales and Agua Prieta. The death toll continues to rise.
